Today's plane crash was literally 2 blocks from my office. Some parts of the campus were evacuated because debris from the explosion caused some damage and smoke was being dragged in by the ventilation system. We certainly smelled the smoke where we were, but were otherwise totally unaffected. The police/emergency response was unreal - within about 10 minutes of the crash, the entirety of York Ave., was filled with easily hundreds of first responders and their equipment. Definitely surreal.

I know I haven't been around much in any digi-form, so I thought I'd take a moment to reconnect with the hive. ;-} The new job is going really well, and I'm learning lots of new exciting stuff every day. It was overwhelming for about the first week, but I'm starting to get the hang of things and get into the rhythm of the place. Its a lot of adjustment for me, between the actual work I'm doing to the fact that I actually have a fixed commute and a desk and a boss I see every day. Sometimes I just scratch my head and marvel at the normalcy of it all.

.... Did I mention I have a desk?

I took me the better part of a week to get over that fact and then proceed to fill it with scads of computing equipment. I've had up to 5 computers each running different operating systems and the guts of a Phaser printer I am attempting to fix crammed on to it. It feels like my very own slice of techie heaven. That printer may or may not get fixed. After three weeks of it sitting in parts on my desk, I think even I might have to run up the white flag on that one. ::sigh:: I hate being defeated like that.

Other than that, I yanked something in my shoulder and then became consumed by a miserable case of the dreaded Lung Crud. blackzero has been taking care of me while putting up with me being in quite possibly the worst mood of my life. The shoulder is better now and the Lung Crud is starting to finally ease up. Which is good, because I'm sick of being sick.

the HR department at Cornell officially verified my employment with my current (psycho) boss - who apparently gave them a glowing review. This makes it all very final and very official. My last day at my current job will be Jan. 13th, and I start at Cornell on the 23rd!
